Professor S.Y. Shah has been working in the field of Adult Education for over three decades at various institutions in India and abroad. Starting his career as a Lecturer in Non formal Education at the National Council of Educational Research and Training, He moved to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) where he served as an Assistant Director and later as Director of Adult Continuing Education Programme for over a decade and subsequently shifting to Planning Commission as Joint Advisor of Education and then to the National Institute of Adult Education as a Senior Fellow .

Currently he is a Professor of Adult Education at JNU and continues as the founder Director of the International Institute of Adult and Lifelong Education, New Delhi since 2002.

He had short stints of teaching and research at Duisburg Essen University in Germany as DAAD Visiting Professor,Aarhus University in Denmark as an Erasmus Mundus Visiting Scholar of European Commission, Warwick University in UK as a Development Fellow of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Syracuse University in USA as a Kellogg Visiting Scholar and Toronto university in Canada as a Senior Social Science Fellow of the Shastri Indo Canadian Institute.

He has been closely associated with several professional organizations and NGOs viz; Indian Adult Education Association and Asian Society of Lifelong Learning as Vice President, World Literacy of Canada as a member of India Advisory Board and President of Reading Association of India
 
     
 
and government bodies as an expert member/chairman of several committees of the University Grants Commission, National Literacy Mission, National Institute of Open Schooling, UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learningand the ASEM Network on professionalization of Adult Education. Professor Shah has undertaken several short term consultancyassignments from UNESCO- India, Commonwealth of Learning; UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Education, Indira Gandhi National Open University and Asian South Pacific Bureau of Adult Education besides completing fourteen research/evaluation projects funded by the national and international agencies.

He has eleven books and forty six papers to his credit and participated and made over thirty presentations at several international conferences held in UK, USA, Canada, Finland,South Africa, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Norway, New Zealand, Germany and Denmark. He received Nehru Literacy Award in 2007 for his manifold contributions to the field of Adult education Currently Professor Shah is researching on professionalization of Adult Education and studying the policy and practice of lifelong learning and skill development and trying to develop the Reading Association of India.
